01/28/2017 - College PREP - Kapolei (Honolulu), HI Kawai is a 2018 first baseman, outfielder with a well-balanced skill set. Defensively, Kawai has quick, active footwork and shows good range in all directions. She is athletic, low in her pre pitch and presents her glove well. Kawai has a good feel for both positions and works well with her momentum. She does a good job in the outfield of working with a small crow hop and gaining ground towards her target. Kawai takes good angles to the ball everywhere she plays and plays with good field awareness. She also has fluid arm action and makes accurate, on-line throws to each target. Offensively, Kawai is tall in her setup and takes an on-time stride to contact. She loads well in her legs and stays smooth with her rhythm/timing in the box. Kawai stays balanced throughout her swing and stays loose through the zone. She works together well with her hips/hands and extends all the way through the ball. Kawai shows consistency in the box and works well up the middle and to opposite field. Overall, Kawai is a great athlete and will only continue to improve on each aspect of her game to play at the highest level.
